What is Scandi style?
When it comes to home décor, Scandi style is renowned for its simplicity, functionality and understated elegance. Our interpretation of Scandinavian style focuses on beautiful statement pieces that layer well together, in natural colours and textures that are tactile, homely and luxurious.
Where does Scandi style originate?
It makes sense to start with the Scandinavian countries right?! Scandinavia includes Denmark, Norway and Sweden, and whilst each country has its own culture, style and heritage, the Scandinavian lifestyle has become synonymous with health and happiness and who doesn’t want to create that in their own home!
The reason for the Scandi lifestyle and subsequently home style becoming so popular is simply that it is a lovely, sustainable way to live. It focuses on enjoying life’s simple pleasures and finding contentment in the everyday.
Our experience originates from Southern Sweden, where you might be surprised to learn that although there are definitely four clearly defined seasons, the weather is more similar to the South of England in Spring & Summer and there is more of a coastal feel, with a little less sparsity and more of a focus on rustic, classic style. In fact, there is a décor style all of its own, known as Gustavian style!
Gustavian style sits somewhere in-between shabby chic and French neoclassicism. It’s more timeless and luxurious than shabby chic, but a little less opulent than French neoclassicism.
What are Scandi interiors?
Scandi interiors are focused on light colours and natural materials due to the need to make the most of any sunlight through the long winter months! Think white on white for any block colours – walls, floor & furniture! That being said, we know that’s not exactly always realistic or functional for every-day life. Our version of Scandi interiors features pops of colour to bring a coastal, New England feel to the mix, which makes it a little easier to bring in layers of grey, blue, stone and navy which can be especially useful for heavy use items like rugs.
How to create a Scandi style home
Scandi style décor is super easy to introduce to your home gradually, as it is classic and timeless. Less is often more and it’s about choosing specific pieces that you love. You may wish to start with simple accessories such as candles and vases which are easy to mix up and move around your home to choose the best spot. Once you’re happy with them, you can start to look at purchasing pieces that will start to bring the room together and serve as focal pieces for your style, such as statement cushions, rugs and occasional furniture.
We’re not about setting style rules as the whole point of Scandinavian living is that you enjoy the every-day and if its simply a vase that makes you happy every time you walk past, then you’ve nailed it! That being said, if you are looking for some guidance on how to make a start on your Scandi interior, I really hope you can find the following useful:
- Aim for a white base and layer other white materials for texture and interest
- Bring in colours such as grey, stone and navy as accent colours, for example through soft furnishings
- Prioritise texture and natural fibres, such as wood, linen, wool, stone and if you like, ethical leather and sheepskins
- Black accents for lighting and hardware like handles can help to bring a space together
- Go for wooden floors wherever possible and layer with rugs; warmer than stone and more chic than carpet
- Choose statement accessories that you love and appreciate and maybe swap them around, to avoid having too much out at one time
- Enjoy making your home into a cosy retreat that brings you happiness.
